Western Digital to Host Hackathon for RISC-V CPU with the Avalanche board designed by Future Electronics

Montreal, Canada – November 28, 2018 – RISC-V (pronounced “risk-five”) is a free and open ISA enabling a new era of processor innovation through open standard collaboration. In this Hackathon, participants are tasked with adding to the RISC-V Linux community. They will be hacking on a soft RISC-V CPU running Linux on the low-cost Avalanche FPGA board.

Hackathon participants could implement a hardware hack by bringing an Arduino shield, Mikrobus or PMOD peripheral and create a solution. They could implement an application using peripherals such as the PMOD Ambient Light Sensor or Adafruit Neopixel Shield. The hack could also be a software-based solution which adds to the RISC-V Linux ecosystem, such as a security solution or a unique bootloader, or anything else that could prove to be useful.

Teams can be made up of one to two people, and eligible participants will be invited to the floor of the RISC-V Summit 2018 Expo, which will be held in the Santa Clara Convention Center on Dec 4th and 5th. First prize is a Visa gift card for USD $1000.00, with second and third-place teams receiving Visa gift cards of $500.00 and $250.00 respectively, along with goody bags for all participants.

Future Electronics and Microsemi Creative Board Subject of Feature Article in ElectronicDesign

Montreal, Canada – December 18, 2017 – Future Electronics, a global leading distributor of electronic components, recently collaborated with Microsemi in developing a Creative Board, which is the topic of an article published on December 11, 2017, written by ElectronicDesign’s Senior Technology Editor, William Wong.

Wong used Microsemi’s Mi-V ecosystem and the Future Electronics/Microsemi Creative Board, while exploring the rise in popularity of RISC-V.

The Microsemi Creative Board from Future Electronics contains an IGLOO2 or SmartFusion2 FPGA. It has connectors for a Pmod, mikroBUS, and Arduino Shield. It also includes a six-channel, sigma-delta analog to digital converter, a 64-Mb serial flash, and 64 MB of DDR2 memory.

In his article, Wong takes the reader through his steps in exploring the board’s capabilities, assessing its effectiveness in FPGA design, and analyzing the interface performance.

He comments on the ease of adding UARTS, and provides an in-depth look into the installation process and testing of examples. He cites that it is simple to add sensors and controls to the system. Overall, he reports that the platform provides the opportunity “to do some interesting projects that take advantage of an FPGA.”
